A weevil, Velatis dominicana n.gen., n. sp. from Dominican amber represents the first fossil weevil from the tribe Anchonini (Molytinae: Curculionidae). The fossil differs from all previously described 29 genera in this tribe by the structure of the pronotum, faint strobes, absence of a complete elytral suture and the presence of two spines at the tip of the tibia. Extant members of the Anchonini are distributed throughout the New World tropics and subtropics, however one African species suggests a Gondwanian origin for the group. A key to the 29 described genera in this tribe is presented.
