Remarks. Coniocleonus hollbergii (Fåhraeus, 1842) and C. turbatus (Fåhraeus, 1842). Citations for these species in regional faunas and checklists, including Fauna Europea, are uncertain due to misconcepts and misidentifications. Cleonus hollbergii Fåhraeus, 1842 was described from Kazakhstan (Zaisan lake); the application of this name to the European species is uncertain and only countries for which controlled documentation is available are listed. Countries with undocumented citations of C. hollbergii are reported in italics: in most cases they are likely to refer to C. turbatus.

Reiche & Saulcy (1854) listed a Cleonus frenatus from Syria, that was considered a synonym of Coniocleonus vittiger in Csiki (1934). However, this is a nomen nudum, listed but not described.
